A SENIOR official at the Gweru City Council health department has said residents are generating high amounts of refuse which he said was even greater than that produced in developed cities.

The acting director of health services, Christopher Ruwodo, blamed the poor economy for the heaps of uncollected garbage at Kudzanai bus terminus saying this was caused by the proliferation of vendors trying to eke out a living during hard times.

The municipality has been facing challenges over the years in collecting waste particularly at the terminus with heath experts warning of a possible disease outbreak.

Though the local authority collects garbage daily in the city centre except on Sundays, the transit dumping site at Kudzanai has been a health hazard, emitting unbearable pong to its immediate environs.

“At Kudzani transit dump site there is continuous discarding of refuse by vendors who use the place (dump site) as their bin,” Ruwodo told NewZimbabwe.com in interview.

“Though we have made all efforts to collect the refuse at the site it (site) continues to have heaps of waste because we have an influx of vendors at the terminus who try to eke a living out of the dire economic situation the country is currently facing.”

Ruwodo said his department continued to be dogged by lack of enough refuse trucks.
