A Harare man has appeared before the Marondera Magistrates’ Courts facing culpable homicide charges after five people died during an accident in which he was driving without a valid driving licence in Wedza.

According to the State, on 3 June this year, Shepherd Gauche of Waterfalls was driving an international haulage truck overloaded with gum poles along the Harare – Wedza road when his truck side-swiped a bus belonging to Aelous bus company, with 60 passengers on board.

During the impact, the gum poles ripped apart the right side of the bus from the front to the back leading to the death of five passengers while scores others were injured.

The deceased were announced as Sheila Sharara, 35, Alice Musekiwa, 36,

Shakespear Musekiwa, 48, Mildred Sori, 30 and Modina Choto, 25.

Post mortem results produced in court by the State showed that the five passengers died as a result of severe injuries and multiple fractures.

The State prosecutor, Shingirayi Nyengere, told Magistrate Victor Muhammad that Gauche was negligent as he drove the haulage truck knowing that he was not a holder of a valid driver’s licence.

Muhammad said he would make a ruling on the matter at a later date.
