SCORES of youths, under the auspices of the National Youths Action Alliance, on Friday stormed the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) head offices demanding the ‘immediate’ resignation of the organization’s chairperson Rita Makarau.

Journalist cum-political and human rights activist Itai Dzamara led the group as they marched along Jason Moyo and Leopold Takawira to ZEC offices in Harare where they dropped their petition without being disturbed by the police.

Waving placards written ‘We are tired of Nikuv and ZEC rigging’, and ‘No elections before a truly independent ZEC,’ the protesters were addressed by MDC-T national executive member Job Sikhala outside the ZEC premises.

“People of Zimbabwe have for a long time been robbed of their votes by Makarau who has been used to steal the elections by the ZANU (PF) regime.

“She has been used to deprive people of their democratic right to elect a government of their choice and today we have come here to demonstrate against that by petitioning her to resign.

“We need an impartial and independent ZEC chairperson. Makarau must do the honourable thing and resign,” the firebrand politician told a cheering crowd.

The MDCs and activists accuse ZEC of rigging elections. Already the MDC formations have indicated that they will not be participating in any election until electoral reforms are implemented.

As a result they will not be participating in the two by elections slated for March 27 in Chirumanzu Zibagwe and Mount Darwin West.
