BIGBOY Mawiwi’s future as Harare City coach was hanging in the balance last night after a faction of the club’s leadership decided to terminate his services. But The Herald understands that the move did not receive the blessing of club chairman Leslie Gwindi. Mawiwi conducted the team’s training session in Harare yesterday but a group of the club’s leadership later met and booted him out.

Repeated efforts to get a comment from Mawiwi last night or any of the club’s leaders were fruitless.

City will host Triangle United at Rufaro on Friday.

Earlier, in the morning, Mawiwi had told The Herald that he was ready for the long haul.

“Believe you me, we are still aiming to finish in the top four come end of season. I will not say much on that but that is what I am confident of,” said Mawiwi.

“The boys are working very hard and they are not showing any signs of giving up.

“Our goals have not changed. We still want to win things and even do better than last season. The championship is won by consistent performance in terms of results but, unfortunately, we haven’t started getting the points yet despite all the good displays.

“I believe we need a breakthrough and things will start falling into place. Just one game will turn things around. Once we start collecting points I am sure we will not look back.” City slumped to their sixth straight defeat when they lost 2-1 at FC Platinum last Saturday and yesterday they were back at training to prepare for their next assignment.

Mawiwi also thanked Gwindi for his support.

“A lot of things have been said but people haven’t looked at the bigger picture. We are very fortunate to have a person like Leslie Gwindi as our club chairman,” said Mawiwi.

“He understands football very well and has been very supportive of the team. For that reason, I promise that we will not let such people down.”
