A SIXTY FIVE year old headman has appeared in court facing ten counts of raping a 12 year old girl from his village each time the minor went to graze family livestock.

Hericanos Chinanga, headman at Tokwe village in Triangle, denied the charges when he appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla and he was remanded out of custody to 26 February for trial.

Prosecutor Sophia Busvumani told the court that between December 2014 and January this year the minor was sent to graze the family livestock at the village grazing land in the company of her younger sister.

The court heard that Chinanga, on several occasions, approached the two minors and sent the victim’s sister to his home under the pretext that he had forgotten something.

Chinanga would then lure the other minor into a secluded place where he would force himself on her and afterwards produce a knife threatening to kill the minor if she ever revealed the abuse to anyone.

The court heard that on the last occasion Chinanga used the same tactic and had anal sex with the minor.

Busvumani told the court that after the abuse the minor struggled to walk back home. The mother found the minor crying in the bushes.

Upon being questioned the minor narrated the abuse and a police report was made leading to the arrest of the headman.

A medical report was produced in court as evidence.
