A Harare man is in a coma at Parirenyatwa Hospital following an attack by a robber at his home in Southlea Park last Tuesday.

According to sources, the robber entered the house in which Knowledge Maphosa (23) and his wife were sleeping at around 3am, armed with a knife and a wheel spanner.

In an interview with The Herald yesterday, Maphosa’s wife — Patricia Mandizvidza (16) — said she heard footsteps in the house and awakened her husband “but it was too late as the robber had already entered our bedroom”.

“My husband gave him the US$6 he had and a Nokia C2 handset. After handing them over, the man stabbed him twice with a knife behind the left ear and left shoulder before assaulting him all over the body with the wheel spanner,” she said.

Mandizvidza said Maphosa fell to the floor and the suspect sat on his head and started eating leftovers from supper. He threatened to kill her if she raised alarm.

After eating, the robber left.

However, Mandizvidza was able to call out for help soon enough for neighbours to respond and apprehend the robber, who was taken to Waterfalls Police Station where a docket was opened.

Maphosa was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital and underwent head surgery.

In another case, last Thursday a 14-year-old girl escaped death by a whisker when she managed to fight-off a man who attempted to rape her in Masvingo as she walked alone to school.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said the girl sustained five stab wounds during the attack, but the assailant fled when she continued to fight back.

No arrests had been made at the time of writing.
