Zimpapers flagship newspaper The Herald was judged as the 2014 Brand of the Year at the annual Megafest Business Network Awards. The annual Megafest Business Awards seek to recognise business people who have excelled in various fields.

Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Supa Mandiwanzira, who officiated at the event, said it was important to celebrate Zimbabweans who were doing well.

He commended the organisers for rewarding people from all the corners of the country and for honouring institutions that have done well in promoting the country.

“We must recognise institutions that keep the country together. The media especially The Herald has done good in uniting the people of the country unlike other newspapers who always rush to sensationalise issues. The Herald has done well to keep the country together and to keep them motivated”

Minister Mandiwanzira said the true heroes were those who were operating even from small towns such as Rusape and Gokwe. He urged people to resist the pull-him-down syndrome, but to celebrate the success of black Zimbabweans.

“A lot of people do not want to recognise black Zimbabweans who do well. When they see a success story they always assume that it is like that because they are fronting for someone else.

“When I started a small business, people said I was fronting for (Dr Gideon) Gono, when I opened a TV production house the stories were I was fronting for (Professor) Jonathan Moyo while another business was said to belong to the First Family. We should desist from that syndrome and learn to celebrate success.”

Other winners included Zi-FM Stereo, Unilever, Nust and Great Zimbabwe University.
