HIGHLANDERS’ preparations for Saturday’s match against FC Platinum were thrown into turmoil on Wednesday when the players skipped training at White City over unpaid winning bonuses.

The players are owed winning bonuses for three matches, Whahwa, Dongo and Sawmill and Flame Lily.

Winning bonuses are pegged at $170 for away matches and $140 for home games, meaning each player is owed $480. The total bill comes to $8,640. Salaries are covered by sponsor BancABC.

Highlanders secretary general Emmet Ndlovu said they don’t have the money to pay the outstanding bonuses.

“Attendances for our home matches have been low because the team has not been performing well of late, so we don’t have the money, not that we don’t want to pay,” said Ndlovu.

“So we are running around to see what we can do before the Saturday match. If we fail to play against Platinum we will be fined.”

Highlanders have only won three times at home against twice Hwange and Whahwa while losing to Caps United and Chapungu which has put coach Bongani Mafu on the firing line.

Unless results improve, fans will stay away, Ndlovu warned.

Highlanders have become the second big club to be hit by a financial crisis after Caps United players boycotted a match against How Mine in April.
