IT appears there will be stiff competition this year in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One soccer league as most of the clubs that have begun preparing for the season have declared their intention to win the championship.

Some of the teams that have already started preparing for the season include Mushowani, Ngezi Platinum, ZRP FC and Gunners.

Karoi United chairman Kenson Kumponda yesterday said they are going to use the matches to assess some of the new players.

“We are playing ZPC Kariba at Chikangwe. It’s a friendly match to prepare our players and assess the newcomers to see if they meet the grade we want.

“We have some new players and we want to see if they make the grade. If they do well then we will sign them.

“We will be mostly focusing on the new players because we have retained the bulk of our players from last year, save for Boudy Mutukura who is now at ZPC Kariba.

“He is the only person who has left so far, but most of the players are back.

“We haven’t signed any players so far because last week we had another friendly against Zatex and would want to play six or eight more friendly matches to prepare our team,” said Kumponda.

Karoi United coach Luckson Phiri said he was happy with the way preparations have progressed at the club.

“We are taking things step by step and I think we have retained 90 percent of our players except Innocent Chiwaridzo who is still to report for training. As forWalter Jerimani, I understand he has gone to school somewhere, but I am yet to get all the information.

“Levison Selusi is still to report for training also.

“We want to strengthen our team to fight for the honours,” said Phiri.
