JUSTIN Kersten was crowned the 2014 Matabeleland Amateur Championships winner after an impressive show at Bulawayo Country Club over the weekend.The Bulawayo-based amateur beat several amateurs in the event that carries points in the qualifying battle for the Eisenhower Trophy to be held in Japan.

Kersten, a junior national team player, carded 73, 71, 68 and 72 for a total 283 after the four rounds and pocketed the 25 points for the first place finish.

Playing off zero handicap, he was three strokes better than second-placed Tonderai Masunga of Wingate who scored 72, 70, 68 and 76 for a total 286.

He amased 17 points for his efforts.

Gary Thompson, who is having a good season, had rounds of 72, 71, 75 and 72 for a total 290.

Thompson is playing off minus three handicap. Ray Badernhoist was fourth, tied with Visitor Mapwanya.

Pre-tournament favourite Brett Krogg finished in sixth place.

The players will take part in the Midlands Open, Manicaland Open, Harare Open and Zimbabwe Amateur.
