LUCKY Sam ended Equina’s dominance in the Republic Cup when he won the Republic Cup on Saturday at Borrowdale.

The three-year-old, saddled by jockey Randall Simmons, romped to victory in the 19th edition of the Republic Cup in a g field.

Lucky Sam finished second in last month’s OK Grand Challenge Race but turned it around to win the Republic Cup.

Pre-race favourite Equina finished second in a star-studded field that featured star names like A King is Born, Captain’s Tiger and Madigan.

Orbit War finished third with Madigan fourth in the 1900m race.

Latin Queen, with Lance Pagel on the saddle, won the first race of the day, the FBC Holdings Maiden Juvenile Place, which was run over 1600m.

Sherman Brown rode Maridadi to victory in the day’s second race, the Telecel Zimbabwe Maiden Plate over 1300m.

The 1700m Eldorado Game Ranch Maiden Plate was won by Rock The Cashbar who was ridden by Juan Paul Van Der Merwe.

Francois Herdolt steered Double Bind to victory in the Air Zimbabwe Merit Rated 70 Handicap that was run over 1600m.

Jockey Hennie Greyling led American Smooth to victory in the 1300m Catercraft Novice Plate, while Sido, who had seasoned jockey Karl Zechner on the saddle, won the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe Merit Rated 70 Handicap.
