THE top seed in the boys Under-18, Ngoni Makambwa, began his campaign at the Select Healthcare tennis tournament on a winning note when he beat Andrew Kunaka 6-3, 7-5 yesterday at Harare Sports Club.Makambwa had earlier on received a bye in the first round before prevailing over Kunaka.

The top seed will take on Richard Ngwarwi in today’s quarter-finals.

Ngwarwi defeated Sean Chikumbu 6-4, 6-0 in the first round and went on to win by a walkover against Jason Chigaazira.

However, Makambwa has to up his game if he is hoping to last the distance.

“I didn’t play well my first match, I was struggling a bit with my strokes, my backhand, my volleys and my serves, but in the next match I hope I will improve,” said Makambwa.

“I will have a practice later today for my match tomorrow (today). My goal is to play in the finals and win the tournament.

“There are competitive players who are participating in this tournament and basically I am also learning from my mistakes from the previous tournaments which I played.

“Three days ago I played in Mutare and I lost in the finals to Alwyn Mushonga. I came here to improve my game and I can make it through hard work.”

In the other matches, fourth seed Derrick Namanya also had a good start when he dismissed Farai Mahere 6-1, 6-3.

Namanya has a date against Kudakwashe Chirazembe who beat Sinfree Tizora in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Munashe Chingono thumped Kean Makuwaza 6-1, 6-0 and will meet third seed Michael Gutu, who had a walkover, against Tapiwa Zibowa.

Chingono and Gutu will clash in the quarter-finals.

In the girls section, top seed Beverly Matsiwe sailed through to the last eight when she thumped Dipali Patel 6-0, 6-0 while Lisa Mugadza beat Precious Nkomo 6-0, 6-2 to book her place in today’s matches.

Kundai Manyonga beat Bionia Kaseke 6-0, 6-0 and Karen Machisa overpowered Shalon Maquina 6-0, 6-0 in the other match.

Second seed, Zahra Finnigan also had a good day on the court when the thumped Shyleen Thole 6-0, 6-0.

In the Under-14 and Under-12 age-groups, most matches started in the second round with most players getting byes on the opening day of the tournament at Old Hararians.

Jasi Rawland dismissed Tafadzwa Nyika 6-3, 7-5 while Tendai Mlambo beat Thabo Ncube 6-0, 6-0 in the boys Under-14.

Taona Muhwandagara beat Mudiwa Chiromo 6-0, 6-2 in the first round.

In the girls category, Tsitsi Mahere beat Tinashe Machida 6-0, 6-0 and Joyce Chuma overpowered Chantel Majilana 6-2, 7-5.

Nandi Munyulwa cruised to the next round when she dismissed Vimbai Madanha 6-0, 6-1.

Tariq Tawakali defeated Simbarashe Chuchu 6-2, 6-3 in the boys Under-12 and Tinashe Mukwesha beat Washington Muroyiwa 6-2, 6-3.

In the girls’ section, Grace Manyonganise beat Priviledge Mugwadi 6-1, 6-3 and Jamila Tawakali beat Nicole Mandeya 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament continues today with matches at Harare Sports Club which is the main venue and Old Hararians.
