A 34-year-old woman nearly lost both hands after she was struck with an iron bar by her husband allegedly for not doing laundry.

Sibongile Maphosa, bandaged after fracturing both hands, unsuccessfully tried to withdraw charges against her husband, Johnson Sigauke, 50 when she appeared in court this week.

The magistrate however told her the case could not be thrown out because the charges were serious.

“This is a punishable offence and we cannot withdraw the charges. He deserves to be taught a lesson so that he learns that domestic violence is a serious crime,” said magistrate Takunda Mtetwa, adding Sigauke was shameless.

Maphosa had told the court that: “I have forgiven him because he had never behaved in the manner he did.”

The couple resides in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo but the assault occurred at their rural Nyamandlovu home.

Prosecuting, Tawanda Tsatsa said on March 18 this year, Sigauke complained that his wife had not washed his clothes.

The wife responded by saying there was no need for him to remind her because it was her duty, and an incensed Sigauke took an iron bar and started hitting her on the hands.

He also kicked her several times, the court heard.

Maphosa fractured her fingers but still wanted to forgive her abusive hubby.

The magistrate sentenced Sigauke to nine months in jail but suspended three months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining six months were suspended on condition that he completes 210 hours of community service at George Silundika High School on Nyamandlovu.
