A MASVINGO man recently burnt his neighbour’s homestead after he had lost his $3 and a knife in a beer brawl, a magistrate heard on Monday.

Property worth $3 273 was destroyed in the inferno.

Marakayi Tizirayi (24) appeared before Magistrate Langton Ndokera facing charges of malicious damage to property and was remanded out of custody to 17 December for continuation of trial.

Prosecutor Fidelicy Nyamukondiwa told the court that on 30 October this year Tizirayi was drinking traditional beer in the Village Tizirayi area under Chief Nyajena in Masvingo.

The court heard that Tizirayi left the beer hall shouting that he was going to set the complainant’s (Lillian Mudzonga) kitchen hut on fire. Nyamukondiwa said Tizirayi was drinking in the company of the complainant’s father-in-law and a misunderstanding arose between the two.

The court was told that the complainant had gone to the dam for some laundry when the accused arrived at her homestead and set the hut on fire.

In his defence Tizirayi said the hut was burnt as a result of a veld fire that was spreading in the area during the day in question.

He further told the court that he was assaulted by the complainant’s father in law for unclear reasons and he took his knife which was in his wallet together with $3 and his pair of sandals.

Tizirayi told the court that he was severely beaten and was swollen all over his face and could not see clearly such that he was not in a position to set the hut on fire.
