A MAN from Odzi was hauled before Mutare magistrates’ courts facing charges of killing a python which had strayed into his sister’s livestock pen and swallowed a goat.

Kudzanai Rutsenza, 34, of Fenkat Farm appeared before magistrate Sekai Chiwundura facing charges of contravening section the Parks and Wildlife Act which outlaws disposing of any protected animal.

The offence attracts minimum mandatory nine-year jail term if one is convicted.

Rutsenza is denying the charges. He told the court that the python was chocked by a rope which was tying a goat the snake had swallowed swallowed.

He also said that the python died as they attempted to pull the swallowed goat out using the rope.

The court remanded him to March 18 on free bail.

Prosecutor Donald Mudadirwa told the court Rutsenza saw a python near his sister’s goat pen which had already swallowed a goat and was having trouble moving.

He reportedly made efforts to contact Parks and Wildlife officials to come and collect the python.

However, Parks officials took long to attend the scene forcing him to kill snake. Rutsenza partially burnt it before burying it in the sand.

A Parks official, Dominic Mabvanyika, later arrived at the scene but discovered that the python had already been killed.

The dead python was exhumed and had a value of $ 2,000.

Rutsenza handed himself to the police.
