A VICTORIA Falls man told a local court this week that he regretted buying his friend alcohol after going home in the dead of night to find him in bed with his wife.

Victor Jinde, 32, of Aerodrome, is facing charges of assaulting Trevor Johnson, 56, who also lives in the same neighbourhood of the resort town.

Appearing before Victoria Falls magistrate Sharon Rosemani on Friday, Jinde claimed he had drinking with Johnson at a local pub when the latter suddenly disappeared.

Later that night, and drunk as a kite, Jinde made his way home.

“We were drinking beer with Johnson and I am the one who was buying him beer for the whole evening as a friend,” he told the court as he denied the assault charge.

“He (Johnson) suddenly disappeared and I was surprised when I caught him red handed with my wife at home.

“He is the one who started beating me up and I ended up picking a piece of wood.”

He is also being charged with theft after he allegedly stole a cellphone handset from an unconscious Johnson.

The name of the woman was not given in court.

Magistrate remanded Jinde in custody to May 26 for trial.

Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi said the incident occurred on May 5 in the resort town.

“The complainant was at his girlfriend’s place when the accused arrived at 9PM resulting in a misunderstanding.

“The accused hit the complainant several times with a piece of wood resulting in him sustaining injuries on the arms, legs and eyes,” said the prosecutor.

The State says that after beating Johnson, Jinde went on to search his trousers’ pockets and stole a cellphone handset.
