A CHIMANIMANI man has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for raping his three year-old sister in the absence of their parents who were toiling in the fields.

Mutare Provincial magistrate Livingstone Chipadze caged the 23 year-old rapist on Tuesday, suspending three years on conditions.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, was convicted on his own guilty plea.

Passing sentence, Chipadze told the man he had committed a heinous crime which deserved a heavy sanction.

“You have committed a very serious offence at a time society is calling for stiffer sentences such as hanging, castration or life sentence for perpetrators,” said the magistrate.

Public Prosecutor Mike Tembo told the court that the vile abuse occurred on August 20 last year at Zimunda village, under Chief Muusha in Chimanimani.

Tembo said on that day at around 6am, the brother was left at home in the custody of the minor whilst their mother went to the fields.

The minor is reported to have approached his brother who was seated in a shed outside the hut and sat by his side.

The brother then grabbed the child and raped her.

Officers at Shinja Police Station took the child to Mutambara Mission Hospital for further examination.

A medical report confirmed that indeed the minor was sexually abused leading to the arrest of the brother on January 28 this year.
