A 29 YEAR OLD Gutu man caused the death of his four-year-old son after assaulting him with a number of objects including a hot iron rod on his buttocks for soiling himself, police have said.

Francis Gwendu from Zvinowanda Village, Chief Nyamandi in Gutu is now in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon facing murder charges.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said Francis battered his son Tapiwa Gwendu with a hot iron rod and a pellet air gun on his buttocks, legs and hands after the little boy had soiled his pants at night.

Dhewa said after finding out that the boy had soiled his pants, Gwendu rushed to take a pellet air gun from the bedroom and beat up the boy several times on his buttocks.

Gwendu further took a rope and tied his son’s legs to the beam of the roof and started beating him several times on his buttocks using both a whip and a pellet air gun before taking a hot iron rod from the fire and rolled it on the boy’s buttocks and left thigh.

Dhewa said as a result of the beating, the boy suffered bruises on his legs, hands, buttocks and a severe cut on his head.

Two days after the assault, Gwendu saw his son’s health deteriorating and finally rushed to ask his nephew, Kumirai Chagonda, (34), to help him take the boy to the clinic.

On reaching home, Gwendu and Chagonda found the boy already dead. The case was reported to the police and Gwendu was arrested.
