A CHIRUMHANZU man was on Monday acquitted for killing his brother’s child aged three weeks after using her as a ‘whip’ to assault the tot’s mother.

He was set free after High Court Judge, Justice Martin Makonese sitting at the Gweru circuit considered his mental condition.

Arthur Matare, 36, of Village Dzorai under headman Chipembere, Chirumanzu was referred back to Whahwa prison where he would be transferred to a mental institution for further treatment and care.

The state’s case was that on March 6, 2011 Matare went to his brother Blessing Matare’s homestead where he found Blessing’s wife, Agneta Chigumira breastfeeding Thandiwe Matare.

He asked for keys to his house and when he was told they were not available he became irritated and grabbed Thandiwe by the neck before snatching the baby from its mother.

He then struck Agneta four times with the tot before smashing the infant on the ground.

Matare also picked a brick and struck Agneta with it once on the knee.

Agneta fled from the scene and when she returned she found Thandiwe had died.

The case was reported to the police leading to Matare’s subsequent arrest.
