A CHITUNGWIZA man is on the run after he set on fire a thatched hut in which his wife and three others were sleeping at a farm in Marondera.

According to Inspector Norbert Muzondo, the Mashonaland East provincial spokesperson, Fungai Chitumbwa, 31, travelled to Birchleigh farm in Marondera where his wife, Chipo Tamaela stays.

On reaching the homestead at around 2130 hours, he found Tamaela and three other family members, Agnes Tamaela, 45, Delight Tamaela, 7, and Tatenda Tamaela, 5, asleep before he sprinkled the hut with petrol and set it alight.

Chipo was the first to discover that the hut was on fire and tried to douse the flames but Chitumbwa wrestled her and threatened to kill her.

She however, managed to scream and Chitumbwa ran away.

As she battled the blaze Chipo suffered severe burns all over her body and is still hospitalised at Mahusekwa hospital in Marondera rural but the other family members managed to escape unhurt.

Police have now launched a manhunt for Chitumbwa whose whereabouts remain unknown.
