A 21 year old man from Lower Gweru who raped a bar operator before stealing cash from her was on Friday slapped with an effective 14 years after being convicted on two charges of rape and theft respectively.

Thabiso Mkandla of Mcijweni village under Chief Bunina, Lower Gweru, got drunk and raped his victim at a cocktail bar in the area before stealing $280 from her wallet.

Regional magistrate, Morgan Nemadire initially sentenced Mkandla to 15 years for the rape charge but suspended three years on condition of good behaviour.

On the theft charge, Mkandla was slapped with three years but one was suspended on condition he pays $280 restitution to the bar lady by the 30th September this year.

Allegations were that on the 21st May 2012 at around 2150 hours, Mkandla was drinking beer at a named cocktail bar at Saint Faith, Lower Gweru.

The bar operator asked him to leave as she was about to close but Mkandla refused to vacate and instead slept in the bar.

The bar operator and her assistant left Mkandla asleep on the bench as they took stock for the day.

When they tried to wake Mkandla up but he became violent.

The bar assistant reportedly fled while the bar lady locked herself behind the screen cover of the bar counter but Mkandla forcibly gained entry through a small gap on the screen.

Mkandla proceeded to push the bar operator to the ground and put on a condom before raping her once. He also stole $280 in a wallet before escaping from the scene.

The bar operator later reported the matter to the police leading to the subsequent arrest of Mkandla.
