A 28 year old man from Chedope Village under Headman Masunda in Chivi who was in the habit of robbing women at gunpoint and raping them afterwards has appeared before the courts.

Rirani Mukata allegedly committed the offences together with an accomplice identified as Morgan Mukata who is still at large.

They allegedly raped two of the three women they found walking along a footpath on their way to a school where they are doing extra lessons. One of the rape victims is seven months pregnant, the Court heard.

Mukata pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded in custody by Magistrate Collet Ncube.

Prosecutor Sophia Busvumani told the court that on September 29, 2014 at around 12 30 pm three young women were walking from Mahumucha Village going to Chidyamakono High School for supplementary lessons.

As they approached Gwamazamu stream, Mukata and his accomplice greeted them and a conversation started. In the course of the conversation, Mukata produced a pistol and ordered the women to walk into a nearby bush.

After a few hundred meters Mukata demanded that the women surrender their money and all the valuables they had on them. After taking their valuables the duo allegedly raped two of the women including the one who was pregnant.

The two rapists then disappeared.

On September 30, 2014 the duo allegedly pounced on another group of women whom they robbed but did not rape.

Mukata was arrested at Denge Business Centre in Chivi in November and an identification parade was conducted at Criminal Investigations Department at Mashava and he was positively identified by his victims.
