A South Africa-based Zimbabwean allegedly ran over a rival suitor and then threw him out of a moving vehicle after he saw him exchanging contact details with his lover. The man died on admission to hospital. It is alleged that Kaphelani Moyo (27) from Mberengwa, who was with two other men, killed Clement Charoma with an Isuzu truck.

Moyo is on the run.

His alleged accomplice – Richard Mabikire (27) – appeared before Mberengwa magistrate Mr Christopher Maturure and was remanded out of custody to Friday next week on US$100 bail.

Prosecutor Mr Michael Ncube alleges that on January 10 this year at around 8pm in the Ngungubane area in Mberengwa, Charoma was drinking opaque beer with friends when he went to relieve himself in a bush.

Mr Ncube said while walking to the bush, he met a woman and after talking to her, they exchanged contact details. Moyo was driving by when he saw the two talking. With his colleagues, they confronted Charoma and a heated argument ensued. Moyo allegedly got in his car and ran over Charoma.

The accused allegedly put him in the back of the truck and drove off. The court heard that as they approached the Ngungubane road-rail crossing, they threw Charoma out of the moving vehicle. They allegedly abandoned the car a short while later as they were involved in an accident whose details were not disclosed.

Charoma sustained broken legs and bruises on the head. Mr Ncube told the court that passers-by took Charoma to Matibi Hospital, from where he was referred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital where he died. Mabikire handed himself over to the police after investigations linked him to the alleged crime.
