A MARANGE Resources security guard who shot and killed a diamond panner in Marange last year has appeared before Mutare magistrate Anniah Ndiraya.

Simbarashe Mupawaenda, 31, of Kututa Village, Chief Saunyama in Nyanga was granted $50 bail and ordered to reside at company houses in Marange and report to police every Friday.

He will be back in court on May 21 for trial.

Prosecutor Shepherd Chavarika told the court that the fatal shooting occurred on July 3, 2014 while Mupawaenda was on a night duty patrol.

The court heard that Mupawaenda was in the company of workmate Patrick Madoro when they chanced upon a group of illegal artisanal miners on their company’s diamond concession.

The group of panners included the now deceased Farai Madenga.

The guards are said to have threatened to arrest the panners who became hostile and charged towards them armed with stones.

Mupawaenda, who had a gun, reportedly fired a warning shot in an effort to scare them away but the group continued charging towards them.

Mupawaenda then fired directly and hit Madenga in the head.

The latter died on his way to Mutambara Mission Hospital in Chimanimani in a Marange Resources ambulance.

A post mortem conducted at Mutare General Hospital revealed severe head injuries as cause of death.
