A MARONDERA man who was released from prison in 2013 after serving a five-year jail term for rape was last week sentenced to another five-year prison term after being convicted of attempted rape.

Joseph Sande, 30, of Nyameni, who is said to have a fetish for women’s lingerie, was convicted on charges of attempting to rape an 18 year-old school girl as she walked home from school along a bushy road in Marondera’s Ruzawi suburb.

Sande had barely been a year out of prison after being incarcerated five years for rape.

According to the State, Sande who was armed with an assortment of traditional weapons, grabbed the teenager’s hand before dragging her into the nearby bush and threatened her with death if she screamed.

However, the school girl managed to scream and passers-by came to her rescue, forcing Sande to flee the scene.

State prosecutor, Emmanuel Dera, revealed that the rapist was also in the habit of moving around in stolen women’s lingerie, adding that some of these items were found on his person when he was later apprehended.

Pleading guilty to the attempted rape charge, Sande asked the court for mercy, claiming he commits crimes unwittingly.

However, the trial magistrate Timion Makunde said Sande had turned into a hardened criminal, adding a lengthy sentence including hard labour was appropriate.
