TONDERAI Masunga won the Julius Robinson Trophy after shooting a one-under-par at Wingate at the weekend. In an event that attracted 94 golfers, including several top amateurs who completed the 36-hole tournament, Masunga emerged tops.

This boosted his order of merit standing where he is now leading.

The Royal Harare golfer carded 67 and 74, playing off one handicap, to win the second event on the local circuit.

The Julius Robinson Trophy was the second tournament after the players took part in the Dugmore Trophy in Bulawayo where Scott Vincent won.

Several players struggled in the second round as the best score posted was a one-under-par 71 by Sechmore Saoneka.

A 71 and 73 from Jack Allard saw him finish second at 144 while Stuart Krog finished third. Krog carded 75 and 72 for a total 147. Thembelani Vundhla was fourth, David du Preeze finished fifth after scores of 74 and 75 while Pride Sembo, Sechmore Saoneka, Mohamed Racheed, Chris Manning and Tatenda Makunde completed the top ten.

Meanwhile, in the United States, at the Farmers Insurance, Brendon de Jonge finished in a five-way tie for 27th position at the weekend.

The event at the Torrey Pines Golf Club at San Diego saw the Zimbabwean start gly before he faded during the weekend. He had rounds of 67, 72, 73 and 74.

The cut was De Jonge’s seventh in the 2014-15 season and saw him pocket US$44 000.
