RIOTS have erupted in the ancient city of Masvingo in Zimbabwe after a municipal vehicle ran over and killed a three-month-old baby at a local bus terminus while chasing illegal vendors.

According to reports, the mother of the child had left the minor unattended as she fled the municipal police.

The death has sparked a melee that has culminated in angry residents setting the municipal vehicle and another commuter bus parked near the scene on fire.

The driver of the municipal vehicle and other municipal police officers fled the mob to seek refuge at the Chikato Police Station.

The local fire brigade was also chased away from the scene.

When CAJ News crew arrived at the scene of the incident, some of the vehicles were still burning while a huge crowd had gathered to mete punishment out to anyone from the council.

“We are going to destroy anything that is owned by the city council because how can they kill an innocent child,” said Bhonjisi Chauruka, an eye witness.

Masvingo Mayor, Hubert Fidze, has since sent a message of condolence to the bereaved family and urged Masvingo residents to remain calm.

“What a black day for our city. I would like to apologize on behalf of the council on the unfortunate incident at Mucheke bus terminus,” he said on his Facebook page.

“We shall strive to avoid such anomalies in future. I however urge Masvingo residents not to take the law into their own hands. I am pained to witness the loss of the innocent baby,” added Fidze.
