A GUTU man who, in mitigation, told a Masvingo court he had not raped but merely inserted fingers into his victim’s privates has been sentenced to 16 years in jail.

Lonely Moyo, 32, of Mupandawana growth point in Gutu, will however spend 10 years behind bars with hard labour for the foiled rape of a 15-year-old school girl.

This is after Masvingo magistrate Judith Zuyu conditionally suspended six years of the sentence.

In his defence, Moyo pleaded for a leniency, arguing he did not rape the girl but only inserted his fingers into her privates.

Magistrate Zuyu would however, have none of it and told the rapist he deserved to be locked away for a long time.

Zuyu said Moyo was social misfit who posed “a great threat to the opposite sex in his community”.

Prosecutor Moreblessing Rusere told the court that the attack happened sometime in April this year.

The girl, a Form 3 student at a local school, was coming from extra lessons and passing through a bushy area on her way home.

The court heard that Moyo, who was hiding in the bushes, emerged and pulled the girl back from behind and forced her onto the ground.

He then removed the teenager’s underclothes before inserting his fingers into her privates.

The court was told Moyo only stopped abusing the girl when she screamed.

A passer-by came to her rescue, apprehended Moyo and surrendered him to the police
