IN a shocking act of heartlessness, a Gutu woman stuffed her newly-born baby boy into a handbag and dumped him in a river, a local court heard this week.

Pfumisai Tokwe, 45, of Chiwara Village under Chief Chiwara in Gutu, appeared at Gutu Magistrates Court on Monday charged with infanticide.

It is the State’s case that sometime last month, Pfumisai gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Mutero Mission Hospital and was discharged a few hours later.

However, while on her way home, Pfumisai allegedly wrapped the baby with a towel before stuffing him into a handbag.

She then threw the handbag into Nyawire River and proceeded home.

Upon arrival, one Eunice Tadzenga asked her where she had left the baby and Pfumisai lied that the child had died soon after she gave birth and that the body was disposed of by staff at Mutero Mission Hospital.

However, a few days later the lies unravelled and police, acting on a tip-off, started investigating the case.

Records from the hospital showed that Pfumisai was discharged with her baby and that both were in good condition.

After being quizzed by the police, Pfumisai later revealed that she had dumped the baby in Nyawire River.

It also emerged that she first tucked the baby into her handbag before throwing it into the river.

Gutu resident magistrate Nyasha Vhitorini remanded her out of custody to December 15 for continuation of trial.

Beatrice Mukaro prosecuted.
