Eight MDC-T activists who were arrested last week in Epworth on allegations of assaulting zanu-pf supporters were yesterday remanded in custody to today for bail application. The party’s Ward 11 councillor Antony Shingadeya (52), Songi Chari (32), Veronica Chinembiri (35), Alex Makina (33), Nyararai Chipindu (52), Moses Chindanga (26), Kholwani Makina (26) and Emmerson Makahamadze (27) appeared before magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with public violence.

Through their lawyers Mr Marufu Mandevere and Mr Musindo Hungwe, the activists told the court that after their arrest they were detained in filthy police cells filled with urine and forced to spend the night standing.

Mr Mandevere told Mr Mahwe that some of his clients would seek compensation from the State if their allegations were proved to be correct through investigations.

Prosecutor Miss Sharon Mashavira alleged that on Sunday last week, MDC-T held a political rally at Epworth Local School Board open grounds where the main speaker was party leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.

She said after attending the rally, the activists acting in connivance, proceeded to Belapazi Farm, a Zanu-PF ghold.

Upon arrival at the farm, she alleged, the MDC-T activists started assaulting the complainants using bricks and stones, while going from one house to the other.

During the process, Miss Mashavira alleged, the activists destroyed windowpanes, doors, chairs and tables among other properties valued at $1 000.
