Eight MDC-T activists who were arrested in Epworth on allegations of assaulting Zanu-PF supporters were last week granted US$100 bail each.

MDC-T Ward 11 councillor Antony Shingadeya (52), Songi Chari (32), Veronica Chinembiri (35), Alex Makina (33), Nyararai Chipindu (52), Moses Chindanga (26), Kholwani Makina (26) and Emmerson Makahamadze (27) appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with public violence.

The group, represented by lawyers Mr Musindo Hungwe and Mr Marufu Mandevere, are expected back in court on June 23.

Mr Mahwe ordered them to reside at their given addresses and not to interfere with State witnesses. The investigating officer, Assistant Inspector Clifford Mugaviri, told the court that some of the assaulted Zanu-PF supporters were badly injured and were still in hospital. Asst Insp Mugaviri said he feared they might interfere with witnesses because they lived in the same area.

Prosecutor Ms Sharon Mashavira said MDC-T held a rally at the Epworth Local School Board open grounds where the main speaker was party leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.

She said after attending the rally, the activists, acting in connivance, went to Belapazi Farm — a Zanu-PF ghold.

Ms Mshavira said the MDC-T activists moved from one house to the next assaulting the complainants using bricks and stones.

She alleged that the eight destroyed windowpanes, doors, chairs and tables, among other properties, valued at US$1 000.
