MDC Renewal Team has reported that 15 of its members were injured, one of them seriously, when they were attacked by those from the MDC-T led by Morgan Tsvangirai in Chitungwiza over the weekend.

A statement from the Renewal Team said youths from the Tsvangirai formation of the party attacked its members who were on their way to a rally in the dormitory town outside Harare.

“Rowdy youths aligned to Morgan Tsvangirai disrupted a well-attended Orange Day held at Unit L Hall in Chitungwiza on Saturday assaulting the national organising secretary of the youth wing, Thabani Mlambo, Kamurendo and six others.

“Today (Monday), the same people assaulted the district organiser for Chitungwiza South, James Chihoto who sustained serious injuries and has since been ferried to the Chitungwiza Hospital,” said the statement.

However MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu seemed to dismiss the incidents as inconsequential.

“I have heard about that through unofficial channels and seen posts relating to that on social media. I am not sure it was a serious clash. Some of these incidences are personal or social differences that are painted as political which is wrong in my opinion,’ said Gutu.

He added: “The fact that it has not been reported to us through the official channels shows that this was at the very least a really minor skirmish.”

Harare police spokesperson Memory Pamire said she was yet to be briefed on the matter.

“I will try to look around but I have not been briefed on that issue,” said Pamire.

The Renewal Team named Jim Ravhanga and Yusuf Andrea who are members of Tsvangirai’s security unit, Wellington Tapfumanei and Delma Kahati, who are known members of the MDC-T structures as the culprits.

“The incident clearly shows that Tsvangirai’s group is not repentant following the violence perpetrated against Renewal Team members including the Treasurer General Elton Mangoma. The Renewal Team condemns violence in all its forms as democrats we urge our former colleagues to refrain from violence,” the political outfit said.

“We also condemn in the gest terms the inability of the police to act decisively on this matter and arrest the perpetrators whose names and places of residence have been provided. This leads to the suspicion that the two groups, Tsvangirai and the police are working in cahoots against the Renewal Team to destruct it from its main agenda which is offering an alternative political party of choice and giving real hope to the people of Zimbabwe.”

The group claimed it had made a police report in Chitungwiza giving a series of docket numbers ranging from (RRB 2278607111316 and 2278016) which it said showed the reports had been recorded.

The MDC split for the second time inside a decade this year giving birth to the Renewal formation following a violent fall-out triggered by last year’s poll loss. The first split occurred in 2005 as former secretary general in the main party Welshman Ncube led a splinter group over allegations of dictatorship against Tsvangirai.
