THE troubled MDC-T is moving to expel suspended deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma as well as his lawyer Jacob Mafume, youth secretary general Promise Mkwananzi and Last Maengahama from the party, in a development likely to accelerate the looming split.

Party spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said the process to expel the four, who have been among the most vocal members calling for leadership renewal, was triggered during a national council meeting in Harare yesterday.

“The national council voting 131 in favour out of 190 decided to invoke the provisions of Article 5.11 of the constitution of the MDC to initiate the process of expelling Honourable Mangoma, Jacob Mafume, Promise Mkwananzi and Last Maengahama from the party,” said Mwonzora.

“In respect of Honourable Mangoma it was felt that after the suspension, he continued acting against the party and to the detriment of the party.”

Mwonzora said although Mangoma had challenged his suspension in court, a tribunal made up of lawyers Douglas Chinava, Joshua Shekede and Chenai Moyo Gumiro had been established to hear his case. The tribunal will decide whether to sit before or after the court hearing.

Mafume, Mkwananzi and Maengahama face expulsion for convening a press conference last week “where they tried to undermine the unity of the party” by announcing that differences in MDC-T were irreconcilable, and declaring they had formed a renewal outfit they called the MDC Team.” — Staff Writer.
