THE MDC-T South Africa branch has launched “Operation Revival” which the party says is among many programmes aimed at mobilising the membership.

A statement from the party said the programme is being spearheaded by one Precious Mutete, a district organising secretary based in Pretoria. The programme which started a fortnight ago was officially launched at the weekend in the township of Sprait by Pretoria Chairman Tangai Marufu.

Addressing the exiled Zimbabwean community, Marufu pledged his support and expressed confidence that the exercise will yield the positive results.

The statement said the meeting was attended by the full district executive including the Youth Assembly who “partook in the door to door recruitment drive which saw a Saul to Paul conversion count of two hundred and sixty three people joining the party.”

According to the statement, “the generality of Zimbabwean expressed gratitude and committed themselves to jealously guard their new found faith.”

The party further claimed that many new members admitted to have been secret followers of the Morgan Tsvangirai-led party all along and they were now happy to be formal members. It is estimated that close to three million Zimbabweans live in South Africa, the bulk of them in the Gauteng Province.

The new membership recruitment drive comes soon after splinter MDC groups, MDC-N and the Renewal Team, recently announced their meagre and accused Tsvangirai of being a “dictator” whom they likened to President Mugabe.
