AS the fight for control of the MDC-T continues, three party activists this weeek appeared in court charged with the assault of party provincial organising secretary and former Mbare legislator Tichaona Munyanyi.

The appearance of the trio brings to four the number of activists arraigned before the courts after the assault that occurred on April 10 as the MDC-T national council sat to expel deputy treasure general Elton Mangoma and three other top leaders.

Provincial youth chairperson Shakespear Mukoyi is currently on bail for the same offence.

Denford Ngadziore, 32, Francis Machimbidzofa, 38, and Rhino Mashaya, 33, were not asked to plead when they appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe.

They were granted $100 bail each, and ordered to report at Central police station once every Friday until the case is finalised.

Early this year Mangoma was also attacked by angry youths after he wrote two stinging letters asking party leader and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to resign following the party’s dismal showing at the polls last July won by President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF by a two thirds majority.

Tsvangirai has dug in and sought the support of the party’s grassroots.

Ngadziore is currently on bail after being charged with the assault of expelled MDC-T deputy treasurer general and former Energy Minister Elton Mangoma.

A host of other activists also appeared in court over Mangoma’s assault with the former energy minister has pointed an accusing finger at Tsvangirai as the instigator in chief of the violent attack on him.

Besides being assaulted, Munyanyi also reportedly lost a phone valued at $100 and cash amounting to $200 the state alleges.

According to court papers the incident occurred at the party headquarters Harvest House before a national council meeting where youths aligned to Tsvangirai among them the quartet tried to block Munyanyi from attending the meeting.

The provincial organiser allegedly forced his way into the building leading to a violent altercation reportedly because the complainant is aligned to Mangoma and a group agitating for leadership renewal in the MDC-T.

Prosecutors now allege that Mukoyi, Ngadziore, Machimbidzofa, and Machaya attacked him with open palms and booted feet before relieving him of his valuables and cash.

Munyanyi sustained deep cuts and had to be treated court papers say. The group is due in court on May 22.
