THE success of any country’s campaign for political, social and economic emancipation depends on how the media understand and value the national interest.

Interests are generally classified in three fundamental layers, that is, individual, community and national.

National interests are a summation of individual and community interests which form a g foundation for economic development. The media, as the fourth pillar of the state, should create a positive national image that helps to establish peace and stability to attract foreign direct investment which helps to anchor economic development.

The other pillars of state, such as the executive, legislature and judiciary, must define in clear terms the layers of interests in any nation state. These interests are defined at various levels in the form of visions, strategic goals, objectives, missions, values, principles and cultures.

Let’s take for example Zim-Asset as a blueprint that sets national strategic goals.

This document should define the national value system required to achieve the national vision, and the principles and culture that must be followed in order to achieve the intended national vision.

In this regard, it is the duty of the media to first clearly understand Zim-Asset before they try to educate the public or criticise the document.

In cases where the media have a challenge in understanding certain aspects set therein, they must seek clarification from the relevant authorities.

In instances where the media feel a certain position needs realignment, they must motivate the authorities to consider the media’s view(s) on such an issue.

It is important for the media to understand the value of national vision to economic growth.

However, when the media have a g point of disagreement with the authorities it must inquire from other stakeholders with an objective of rationalising the point of disagreement. This kind of relationship is important to nurture a consultative, non-vindictive culture that builds a g foundation for economic growth.

Although the media are said to be the fourth pillar of the state, they are a g strategic tool that either shapes or destroys any country’s image.

The media as a nation’s mouthpiece can destroy or enhance a country’s image at the stroke of a minute. The perception that the media creates in the public has a far reaching impact on how the community appreciates government policies such as Zim-Asset that seek to empower the people.

In many instances, particularly in Zimbabwe, the media seems to heavily promote self-destructive theories that aim at deflating the economy.

One sometimes wonders whose interest the media in Zimbabwe, particularly the private media, seeks to promote by attacking indigenous and empowerment policies.

What economic benefit do the media get from publishing political stories that polarises the nation at the expense of moonlighting developmental policies?

Nearly everyday, most of the media houses publish information that demonises Zimbabwe.

Many papers are happy to craft headlines that rubbish their own country.

In the majority of cases their stories are to do with negatives that seek to destroy the political and economic image of Zimbabwe. Surprisingly, in most of its accusative stories the media never offer a single sustainable solution.

It is rare to find people in Zimbabwe, especially neo-liberal intellectuals and journalists, talking about how good Zimbabwe is for investment.

Most of our intellectuals and private media journalists are in the habit of demonising Zimbabwe. Instead of using the strength of their academic knowledge to craft strategies that make Zimbabwe a good place for investment, neo-liberal intellectuals and journalists go on hilltops shouting bad about their own country.

The country’s economy has largely been destroyed by individuals who care less about corporate and national interests. They only worry about hedging their lives on donor funds whilst making the majority of Zimbabweans suffer from the effects of their demonic actions.
