MIGHTY Warriors captain Felistas “Figo” Muzongondi says their neighbours South Africa will give them some good competition when they meet in an international friendly match at Dobsonville in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Zimbabwe senior women’s national soccer team left yesterday afternoon for the international friendly.

Both teams have moved a gear up in their preparations for the African Women Championship final qualifying round next month.

The matches between South Africa and Zimbabwe have always proved to be close affairs and Muzongondi said they were looking forward to the match. In their last encounter in Johannesburg last June the teams drew 1-1. It was a close contest as the visitors dominated Banyana Banyana with striker Rudo Neshamba drawing first blood. However, the hosts later equalised via former captain Amanda Dlamini.

Muzongondi is hoping they will post a good win and gauge their preparedness for next month’s crunch tie against Zambia.

“South Africa are a good side and a highly competitive team. They have been exposed at the highest level unlike us as they have played at the Olympics Games. This team also played at the last Africa Cup of Nations and for our team, all the players have not played at Afcon before.

“So we will give it our best shot in this game as we are serious about qualifying for the Afcon. We understand that they have called their gest squad so this match would be competitive for both teams.

“The last time we played them we thought we were going to win but they later caught us unawares and equalised but we will give them a tough time this time around,” she said.

Muzongondi said they have played quite a number of games since the year started and are progressing well.

“We are now much better in terms of fitness as we have played against Egypt twice and also against Botswana.

“We are confident that by the time we play Zambia we would be at our very best and qualify to go to Namibia to play at the Afcon finals. As players we really want to qualify and have been encouraging each other to work extra hard,” said Muzongondi.
