Gokwe Nembudziya legislator Cde Justice Mayor Wadyajena on Monday castigated Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora for allowing mobile phones in schools saying the move was counterproductive as cellphones are disruptive.

Speaking at Kadzirire Primary School in Gokwe where he handed over computers he sourced from the Air Force of Zimbabwe, Cde Wadyajena said the education Ministry was being run like a circus as Minister Dokora introduced things without consultation.

“Everywhere we have travelled to, teachers have bemoaned how Minister Dokora has killed the education sector and I am sure the President has heard about the complaints.

“He has become popular for banning certain policies than to focus on improving education.

“Minister Dokora’s defence over the use of cellphones in schools is absurd.

“What is the purpose of allowing cellphones in schools when computers were introduced in schools?

“Computers operate in the same way as cellphones,” he said.

Cde Wadyajena’s remarks follow Minister Dokora’s statement in Parliament last week that he backed the use of cellphones by pupils in schools saying the cellphones were virtual computers that enhance learning.

The minister said it was important for schools to come up with policies that guide cell phone use as opposed to banning the gadgets.

Cde Wadyajena urged teachers to bring to light how Minister Dokora’s cellphone policy could derail the education system.
