THIS year’s Nationals Easter Bowls tournament will have a foreign flavour after organisers invited participants from neighbouring countries Botswana and Namibia.

The competition, which has been slated for the Easter holidays at Hillside Bowling Club in Bulawayo, is scheduled to get underway on April 18 and run until April 26.

The Namibia and Botswana bowls teams, which featured in the 2012 edition, usually grace the Nationals tournament whenever it is played in Bulawayo, which they feel is nearer to home compared to Harare.

The competition is held every year alternately between the two cities and is one of the important events on the calendar.

Bowls Zimbabwe president Malcolm Evans, who is also going to be one of the players at the tournament, said they were happy to host the foreign teams once again.

“Both teams have confirmed their participation and this will not be the first time for them to play in this tournament.

“We are expecting the tournament to be competitive and interesting and also to attract a huge turnout.

“The two teams always come to play in the National whenever they are held in Bulawayo as they believe they are nearer to Bulawayo.

“All is in place and most of the clubs have started practicing for the event,” said Evans.

Men and women bowlers will compete in all the bowls categories — Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. One of the female bowlers Dru Smith, who has been participating in the Nationals for the past 16 years, said she was looking forward to the big show.

Smith is a member of Alexandra Sports Club and feels her club has a chance of doing well following their fine performance in the Inter Club Fours in Harare recently. We have started our preparations and I believe we stand a good chance of winning. The Fours ladies team won at last years’ Nationals and I am sure this year we will do well.
