THE National Constitutional Assembly on Tuesday petitioned the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission asking it to sanction the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation for ignoring the party’s campaign rallies ahead of the March 27th by-elections.

The party will be battling it out with ZANU (PF) in the Mount Darwin West and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe parliamentary by-elections slated for the end of this month.

The MDC formations have since said they will not contest in the elections which they said had already been rigged by ZANU (PF).

In a letter addressed to ZEC chairperson Rita Makarau and which was delivered to her offices, NCA spokesperson Madock Chivasa said the ZBC was ignoring the party’s campaign rallies.

“As we write to you ZANU PF candidates are getting uncensored coverage on the national broadcaster as the NCA party as well as her opposition parties have never received any single coverage regardless of the fact that we are contestants in the same by-elections,” he complained.

The petition also said ZBC was deliberately denouncing the opposition with the intention of promoting ZANU (PF).

“In their biased coverage ZBC announces ZANU (PF) candidates without even making any effort to mention the names of our candidates or even their political parties. This is quite unacceptable and shameful for a public broadcaster to act as a mouth piece of a political party by openly displaying blatant bias towards it without any moral sense whatsoever,” he further complained.

Professor Lovemore Madhuku’s party also said whenever it was mentioned by the ZBC the state broadcaster was inciting violence against it.

“As NCA party we want to bring to your attention that in its biased coverage of ZANU (PF), ZBC allows use of uncensored hate speech against NCA and other opposition parties contesting in the by elections,” he said.

Announcing their decision to boycott the by-elections the MDCs also cited biased media coverage of their rallies by the ZBC.
