BOXER Themba Nkomozabo scooped gold for Team Zimbabwe when he beat Namibia’s Thomas Mahihanga in the flyweight division of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Games yesterday.

Herbert Rumbidzai, Nelson Mutswayiro and Ndaba Kumbirai all got silver medals.

Rumbidzai lost to Itingi Max of Namibia in the light heavyweight category while Mutswayiro lost to Nthuko Ngamo of South Africa.

In the heavyweight category Kumbirai came unstuck against Ileite Danilo Aegeb of Angola.

A delighted Nkomozabo thanked his coaches and hoped it signalled the start of good things for him.

“I’m very excited to have won gold for my country, I thank all my coaches for this achievement and I hope this marks the beginning of greater things to come,” said Nkomozabo.

Team manager, Petros Musiyambumbi, said his boxers could have won more medals.

“The boy fought a good fight and he deserved to win the gold medal,” said Musiyambumbi.
