HOSTS Old Hararians Sports Club were crowned overall winners of the Old Hararians Invitational rugby tournament after beating Lusaka Rugby Club 25-13 at the weekend.

The annual tournament featured four local clubs and one visiting team.

The teams that took part in this tournament were Harare Sports Club, Police, Old Hararians and their B side the Edwardians and the visiting Zambian side Lusaka Rugby Club.

Old Hararians host the invitational competition annually as a pre-season tournament.

On their way to victory, Old Hararians defeated their B side 25-0 and proceeded to the second match where they beat their bitter rivals Harare Sports Club 18-5.

Old Hararians coach Costa Dinha said he was impressed with his team’s performance and he believes they will start the season on a higher note.

“Generally the boys were a bit distorted in the beginning as this was a pre-season game but we got a good run out and challenge from Lusaka.

“They were more intense than us at the breakdowns but we managed to survive using our back-line, which was quicker and more experienced. The Zambian team came with very young players and we are very grateful that they came and always support our pre-season tournament.

“We are hoping to keep this annual event and we are looking forward to go to Zambia for the A-sides tournament which we usually go for, the last time we were there we did quite well.

“We also hope to keep the relationship with Zambia, it is important to do that for the teams to get more experience and international exposure.

“Our invitational tournament helps us to prepare for the season and in future we hope to invite many teams from Zambia. It is just that we may have financial constrains but will try our best,” Dinha said.

The visiting Zambian side said they were happy with the hospitality which they received from Zimbabwean teams.
