CANADA expressed concern at the reported forced disappearance of Zimbabwean human rights activist, Itai Dzamara.

The former journalist has been missing since Monday after unidentified man reportedly abducted him in a salon in Harare.

Canada said the act was unconstitutional.

“The new Zimbabwean constitution reaffirms the right of citizens to personal liberty, to personal security, to freedom of assembly and association, and to freedom to demonstrate and petition,” the Canada Embassy stated in Harare.

“We call upon the Government of Zimbabwe to shed light on the fate and whereabouts of Mr. Dzamara and secure his immediate release free of harm if he is being held unlawfully.”

There have been conflicting reports on his whereabouts with some suggesting he is in police custody while others have suggested he had been murdered.

In October last year Dzamara was arrested after he called on Mugabe to step down in a petition that was delivered to the presidential Munhumutapa Offices. Since then he has been arrested, assaulted and tortured several times for his ongoing protest.
