A ZIMBABWE Republic Police (ZRP) officer was on Thursday hauled before the Harare courts for allegedly accepting a $30 bribe to release an impounded vehicle.

Alexio Nyamutora, 25, was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe.

He was charged with abuse of public office and remanded out of custody on free bail to 22 April for trial. Nyamutora is stationed at ZRP Avondale.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred on April 21 this year Nyamutora who was on duty targeting and impounding unregistered vehicle.

He then impounded a Subaru Impreza belonging to one Amos Muleya and booked the vehicle at the police station.

Later in the day, he allegedly accepted $30 from the owner and released the vehicle without issuing a receipt.

The con was later discovered, leading to his arrest.
