MIGHTY Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza says their preparations are on the right track ahead of the African Women Championships final qualifying round, first leg tie against Zambia at Rufaro on Sunday. The Zimbabwe senior women’s soccer team has been in camp since last week and they have played a number of matches against local opposition featuring male players.

Yesterday, they played against a Division Two side Sprouting.

They have also played Mbare, an Under-20 side, and lost 0-2.

Mugadza said these matches provided her with a good assessment of her team.

“So far, as a team, we have managed to play some matches and there is a lot of improvement from the way we played in South Africa last month,” said Mugadza.

“I think by weekend we would be ready to face Zambia and ready for a good game.

“We have been trying some combinations in our strike force, rotating the players and we have managed to give attention to all the areas.

“At the moment we don’t have knocks and all the girls are looking sharp.”

The team is training twice a day at Rufaro as they seek to win the home leg of the crunch tie.

Their opponents are expected in Harare later this week but have also been intensely preparing for the match which presents a ticket to the women’s version of the African Cup of Nations in Namibia in October.

Last week, She-polopolo beat Rwanda 3-0 in Lusaka in an international friendly match as they fine-tuned their preparations for the Zimbabwe match.

The Zambians have always played second fiddle to Zimbabwe but have vowed to progress to the Afcon finals at the expense of the Mighty Warriors.

However, the Mighty Warriors are also bullish that they will make it and join six other teams and hosts Namibia in Windhoek.
