PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe will be awarding National Youth Colours to honour exceptional young people and youth serving organisations that have made outstanding contributions towards the cause of youth development.

The awards which are scheduled for July 24 at the Harare International Conference Center are a brainchild of the Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC).

According to the ZYC the awards will focus on various categories that are relevant to young people’s development including economic empowerment, youth participation, sport, arts and academic excellence among others.

“As part of the process, we have partnered with AB Communications, who incorporate ZiFm and Mighty Movies to assist us in disseminating the information and organizing the event. We are therefore jointly organizing the event,” said ZYC.

“We appeal to all citizens, in an outside the country to contribute to this process by nominating the individuals or organization they think have done well for the country over the past years. This process will be blind to race, gender, religion or political persuasion. The National Youth Colours are based purely on the efforts and hard work young people have put in for their country,” added ZYC.

Citizens can nominate any individual they think have done well for their country over the past year. Nomination forms can be obtained by email or on the website at www.nationalyouthcolours.co.zw .

COLOURS CATEGORIES

1. SPORTSMAN

This Award will go to a young man who has excelled in any sporting discipline. This is an award for excellence for young persons who are not only good at their particular sporting discipline but have also been able to do it at the highest level nationally or internationally attaining some recognition in the process. This award will go to a young person who has lifted our national flag high.

2. SPORTSWOMAN

This Award will go to a young woman who has excelled in any sporting discipline. This is an award for excellence for young persons who are not only good at their particular sporting discipline but have also been able to do it at the highest level nationally or internationally attaining some recognition in the process. This award will go to a young person who has lifted our national flag high.

3. YOUNG ENTREPRENUER

This award is for a young person who has excelled in any line of business. Demonstration of skill in multiple sectors is key to this award. There must be evidence of ownership of their business concerns. Employment creation for other young people will be looked for in considering nominees for this award. This young person must have received some international recognition or be trading on an international level to show how they have contributed to

4. YOUNG ARTIST

The above awards are for a young people who would have excelled in any of the cited arts genres. These are awards for excellence for young persons who are not only good at what they do but have also been able to do it at the highest level nationally or internationally attaining some proven recognition in the process. This category caters for all artistic creations which include literary, visual, music and all other performing arts.

5. YOUNG INTELLECTUAL

This award will honor a young person who has performed exceptionally well academically on a national scale and international scale. It will be given to appreciate efforts of young people in the academics as they raise Zimbabwe’s flag. The idea is to motivate other young academics to excel not on the national level but globally and in turn receive global recognition for their contribution to the academic world as a whole.

6. AGRICULTURE

This award will be given to a young person who is in the agricultural sector. There should be evidence of employment creation both locally and internationally. The venture should have recorded significant yield or stock that has increased in terms of increasing the national yield or herd respectively. If the farmer is exporting, the products must be recognized by international standards bodies and should be bringing revenue to the country.

7. COMMUNITY SERVICE

This award will be given to a young person who has worked in specific areas of development from community up to global level consistently towards the improvement of the lives of people in communities and the society at large. This person could be serving from within Zimbabwe or internationally or their community work must be recognized by any national, regional or international body that has given it some credibility.

8. YOUTH AMBASSADOR PEOPLE’S CHOICE

This is a people’s choice award. Voters will vote for the most outstanding young person who has excelled from any of the various disciplines listed or unlisted in the categorized awards. This person should have received some international recognition and the nature of the work should bring motivation and inspiration to other young people.

9. MEDIA

This category will look at individuals or organisations that have made a deliberate attempt to foster youth development issues. Excellence, creativity and innovativeness in national development are a must. There must also be evidence in their work of engendering a positive youth culture.

10. TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

This award will be given to a young person who has contributed immensely to the Tourism and Hospitality industry. As this sector is a key economic driver, the winner must not only show how they have put Zimbabwe’s name on the map but must have contributed directly to the Zimbabwean economy through their trade.

11. CORPORATE ICONYOUNG PROFESSIONAL

This award is for a young person who has excelled professionally and is in a high corporate position that could inspire other young people. In that position, the young person should show evidence of contributing to national development. They must also have put the company on the map locally or globally in terms of their trade output or recognition.

12. MINING

The winner of this award would be a young person who has done exceptionally well in the mining business. Evidence of output, sales, environmental friendliness and safety are important issues. The young person must also be a job creator in all its legalities as regulated by the mining industry.

13. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

This award will be given to individuals or organisations who have contributed towards youth development. Factors like mentorship, equal opportunities for young people must be at the core of the contributor’s mandate to national development.

14. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

This award will be given to a young person who has come up with a new scientific discovery. The case can be strengthened if the nominee has been granted a patent. It will seek to identify and honour a young person who has shown scientific innovation that has or will benefit the country in its efforts to revive the economy. It will also encourage young people to be innovative in inventions of a technological nature. This innovation must have some sort of impact on a global level or must be able to get international recognition.

It is part of the Zimbabwe Youth Council’s Act to Honor and acknowledge hard working young people by awarding them National Colours. This is being done in partnership with AB Communications.
