The election of President Mugabe to chair the African Union has set the tone for this year’s 21st February Movement celebrations to be held in Victoria Falls later this month, Zanu-PF Youth League secretary Cde Pupurai Togarepi has said.

Cde Togarepi yesterday said the recent development will add pomp and fanfare to the 29th edition of the celebrations.

“Our President’s recent election to AU chair has spiced up everything,” he said. “It has added excitement to us and we are looking forward to a great day of celebrating these achievements.” Cde Togarepi said the preparations, which have been scheduled for February 28 in Victoria Falls, Matabeleland North, were at an aanced stage.

The main celebrations will be held at the Elephant Hills Resort, whilst a musical gala has been set for Chinotimba Stadium.

“Almost everything we want for the day is in place right now, in terms of the venue and other resources,” said Cde Togarepi. “We have mobilised provinces so that people come in their numbers to celebrate the prestigious event.”

Cde Togarepi said this year’s theme was yet to be finalised.

The Youth League set up a fund-raising committee comprising its secretary for finance Cde Tongai Kasukuwere, fund-raising co-ordinator Cde Pamela Chitupa and secretary for administration Cde Lewis Matutu, to handle all donations.

The event was founded in 1986 by Zanu-PF youths, with President Mugabe being its patron.

The event was established to encourage Zimbabweans, particularly the youths, to emulate President Mugabe’s revolutionary ideals, charismatic leadership and selfless dedication to the Zimbabwean and African cause.

The celebrations are held annually, with provinces hosting them on a rotational basis.

Last year’s celebrations were held in Marondera, Mashonaland East Province.
