Home » General » Pressure Mounts Against Israeli Envoy in Zim

ABOUT 400 people took to the streets of Harare on Wednesday demanding the immediate expulsion of Israel’s ambassador to Zimbabwe following his country’s military crackdown in Gaza.

The protesters included Palestinians resident in Zimbabwe as well as members of the Zimbabwe Palestine Friendship and Solidarity Movement.

The demonstration comes in the wake of a fresh onslaught by Israel in Gaza against Hamas militants.

The crackdown has left 600 Palestinians dead with Israel losing about 25 soldiers.

Tawanda Makore, the President of the Zimbabwe Palestinian Friendship and Solidarity Movement lambasted Israel for the military crackdown and demanded the immediate expulsion of its representative in Zimbabwe.

“We have signed a petition that demands the immediate expulsion of Israel’s envoy from Zimbabwe. Israel must be declared a pariah state,” said Makore amid applause.

Israel’s crackdown in Gaza has been met with international outrage with most Western governments calling for an immediate ceasefire to halt the carnage.

Johane Mohamed of the Islamic Women Initiative Network lamented the massacre of civilians including women and children and called for tougher sanctions against perpetrators.

“The world must do whatever is possible to stop the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians including women and children,” Mohammad said.

The protesters also called for a boycott of Israeli goods and services including companies such as Caterpillar, Hewlett Packard and Barclays Bank for allegedly supporting the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

NewZimbabwe.com understands that a motion to debate the call to expel the Israeli ambassador will soon be tabled in parliament.

The last envoy to be kicked out of Zimbabwe is former Libyan ambassador, Taher Al Megrahi, who backed the rebels at the height of the revolution against the late Muammar Gadaffi.

Gadaffi was a darling of the Zimbabwean government.
