INCESSANT rains have delayed Zimbabwe’s tobacco marketing season by a month, a senior official has said.

According to Zimbabwe Tobacco Association (ZTA) Chief Executive Officer, Rodney Ambrose, the sales for golden leaf was scheduled to commence early February but had been postponed due to the high amount of the rainfall across the country.

He said the sales were now scheduled to commence in March.

“Stakeholders in the tobacco industry anticipate late February to early March, affecting sales. The tobacco crop is yet to be harvested completely due to the effects of late rains. The rainfall had affected lots of distribution and sales,” Ambrose said.

Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry boasts 88 500 farmers across the country with a total land hectarage of 90 000.

Last year, farmers harvested 216 million kg of the crop.
