A suspected armed robber and carjacker was last Thursday shot and killed by police at one of his hideouts in Southlands, Harare South.

Joseph Kapfunde, believed to be the ringleader of a syndicate that had been robbing and stealing vehicles in and around the city, was shot around 8am after detectives waylaid him.

Although the details were still sketchy, sources said police received information that Kapfunde had a hideout at house number 7648 in Southlands, near Waterfalls.

Acting on the tip-off, police on Wednesday night went to the house but they could not locate Kapfunde sas he was not at home.

It is reported that at around 8am, Kapfunde arrived at his home driving a Toyota Raum believed to have been stolen.

He disembarked from the vehicle upon which police ordered him to stop but he did not take heed.

Kapfunde attempted to flee from the scene and warning shots were fired. He was shot once and died on the spot.

Police recovered a pistol and two stolen cellphones among other valuables.

Kapfunde’s body was taken to a local hospital mortuary and police have since launched a manhunt for his accomplices who are still at large.

In March, two suspected armed robbers were shot dead during a shootout with the police in Kadoma.

These were part of an eight-man gang that was on the police wanted list for committing a spate of robberies in and around Kadoma.

Police recovered four pistols following the shooting incident, which are believed to have been used to commit rob- beries.

In November last year, police arrested eight robbers — believed to have committed a spate of armed robberies in the city, following a shootout in New Tafara, Harare.

Police recovered three firearms, a pellet gun and 359 rounds of ammunition from the robbers who were identified as Ephraim Malcom Matiza (22), Benjamin Musasa (27), Roy Majunga (27), Taurai Fandai (24), Jonathan Muchemwa (31), Trust Misolo (27), Jonathan Mwale (30) and Mostapha Ngunda (36).
